Once Upon a Time in California

My new project: Up and Down California, a bloggish kind of thing commemorating the 150th anniversary of Brewer's travels as field leader of the California Geological Survey. From 1860-64, Brewer and his men traveled over 14,000 miles around the then-new state of California, most of it on foot or muleback, much of it through territory barely (or not at all) known to white people. Over the next four years I'll be posting excerpts from Brewer's letters in real time (+150), along with photos and maps and such. The first entry is up (Brewer arrived in San Francisco on November 14, 1860, 150 years ago last Sunday), and there will be lots more to come; check it out.
