In this age of failing symphony orchestras, the Anytown Philharmonic was forced to cut costs by downsizing. This, in turn, made it necessary to rewrite many of the symphonic masterworks on its program. This fall's program includes such scaled-down works as "The Pine of Rome," after Respighi; "A Small Pencil Sketch at an Exhibition," after Mussorgsky-Ravel; and "Le symphonie modérément imaginatif (The Mildly Imaginative Symphony)," after Berlioz. (The scheduled performance of Mahler's Eighth Symphony, also known as "The Symphony of a Thousand," was canceled after failed attempts to rework it as "The Symphony of Eleven.")
