QOTD: Secret Agent Men Edition

David Brooks has a theory. Or maybe even a screenplay:

The rise of Beck, Hannity, Bill O'Reilly and the rest has correlated almost perfectly with the decline of the G.O.P. But it's not because the talk jocks have real power. It's because they have illusory power, because Republicans hear the media mythology and fall for it every time.
Of course! Duh! It's the mainstream media that's been holding the GOP down with these moronic shills for stupidity. They're Manchurian commentators, every one of 'em. But now Brooks is mad as hell, and he's not going to take it anymore. One more Limbaugh rant, MSM, and the wingnut gets it.

QOTD: EmotiCon Edition

Three for your money today, and we open the bidding with Peggy Noonan's errant stab at defining the concept of empathy:

(Maybe that's what they mean by empathy: Where you come from enters you, and you bring it with you as you rise. But if that's what they mean, then we're all empathetic. We're the most fluid society in human history, but no one ever leaves their zip code in America, we all take it with us. It's part of our pride. And it's not bad, it's good. [parenthesis unclosed in original]
Shaper of recent American domestic history Michael Gerson, fresh from his hometown of Oblivious, shows the limits of Noonan's parochialism with a classic line:
Just imagine the frustration and anger of standing before a federal judge who is predisposed against your claims for racial reasons of any sort.
It's classic because Gerson is speaking here primarily in defense of (and in empathy with) his fellow lily-white American citizens of Ricci v. DeStefano, who are like Gerson, of course, members of the least (by several orders of magnitude) racially-persecuted group in the nation. He really does have to imagine.

From there to David Brooks, who this morning has up one of his weirdly fairly-sensible columns:
...[E]motions are an inherent part of decision-making. Emotions are the processes we use to assign value to different possibilities. Emotions move us toward things and ideas that produce pleasure and away from things and ideas that produce pain.

People without emotions cannot make sensible decisions because they don't know how much anything is worth. People without social emotions like empathy are not objective decision-makers. They are sociopaths who sometimes end up on death row.
Or at the Washington Post or, heck, in the White House.

(Cheap shot? Sure. But in a world of Noonans and Gersons, Bushes and Cheneys, I'm afraid my empathy extends only so far.)

Pimp My Bride

David Brooks procures Ramesh Ponnuru's services for his column in this morning's NY Times, and together they decisively turn off an entire generation of American baby makers with a single phrase:

...Ramesh Ponnuru of The National Review proposes an increased child tax credit to reduce the stress on young families, the seedbed of human capital.
I wonder, would they be willing to wade a bit further into these weeds? Would they be game, for instance, on federal, state and local amnesties on various other seedbed stressors? Or would it be only the one, the necessary activity permitted?

St. Ronnie Recollected

Over on his new blog, Paul Krugman illustrates Ronald Reagan's pattern and practice of racist appeals, giving the lie in so doing to the recent denials by David Brooks and David Broder that I blogged about on Friday and Saturday.

Iron Lungs

Hagiography is the name of the day in conservative editorial circles. It's almost as if they don't have much to look forward to anymore.

Over at the NY Times, David Brooks labors to remove what he considers a false racial slur from the memory of USSR-slayer Ronald Reagan. Reagan never "kicked off his 1980 presidential campaign with a states’ rights speech in Philadelphia [Mississippi] to send a signal to white racists that he was on their side," argues Brooks. He just went to Philadelphia and spoke about states rights. So there.

And Peggy Noonan is in rare form over at the Wall Street Journal, bashing Hillary Clinton repeatedly over the head with Iron Lady Margaret Thatcher. Maggie was a lady, people. You'd walk by that dame after a late-night meeting and "catch just the faintest whiff of perfume, smoke and scotch." Clas-see! (WTF is it with wingers and the smell thing, anyway?)

Peggy continues, all ladylike: blah blah blah, you Hillary Clinton are no Margaret Thatcher. Indeed, no one really likes you and your sort. You are a dirty fucking hippy

...the exemplar of a quadrant within a generation, and it is the quadrant the rest of us of that generation do not like. They came from comfort and stability, visited poverty as part of a college program, fashionably disliked their country, and cultivated a bitterness that was wholly unearned. They went on to become investment bankers and politicians and enjoy wealth, power or both.
An entire quadrant within a generation, lost to ladydom and gentlemanhood. I guess they'll just have to be content with the presidency and both houses of congress.

Same Old Same Old

Peggy Noonan on Hillary Clinton's latest debate performance:

It seemed to me she made it quite possible to assume you know who she'll be making war on.
And who does it seem to Peggers she can assume Hillary will quite possibly be "making war on"? In earthy and direct Noonanese, whose "ox [does it seem I can assume may quite possibly be] gored?" Why, you and yours, of course.

Because [trumpets blast] Hitlary's gonna raise your taxes!

Yes, that's the stunningly original tack the right will take in this coming election season. Can't you just hear the chorus from the wingnut gallery?
If even partially true, this strikes me as...entirely believable.
Update: After reading David Brooks -- a one-man chorus line -- this morning, I see Peggy's actually on the G.O.P. high road.
