Election Night

8:36 pm PST: And South Dakota is rejecting the abortion ban, 60% against with about a quarter of the precincts counted. The good news keeps coming. (But to paraphrase Tommy Carcetti, tomorrow I'll still wake up not a moron in a state with Schweinenpigger as governor.)

8:30 pm PST: Nancy Pelosi is the new Speaker of the House...or so says CNN. I had the privilege of voting for her. Aren't I special?

8:10 pm PST: They're dropping like flies: Clay Shaw, John Sweeney, Don "I did not strangle that woman" Sherwood, Chris "the Count" Chocola, Nancy Johnson, Crazy Curt Weldon...this is fucking awesome. In the Senate, we took out Chafee and DeWine (plus Santorum, as previously mentioned). Jody put a second bottle of wine in the fridge in case the night went badly, but we might have to open it if the night keeps going well.

7:12 pm PST: Brian Williams has McCain and Obama. McCain: We'll rebound next election. Obama: We're cautiously optimistic, and Americans are tired of ideology. Sounds like it's going pretty well.

7:05 pm PST: Sometimes it sucks to be a human. I should be elated to see little Ricky Santorum's concession speech. But he was surprisingly decent--yes, I know he wasn't so decent during the campaign--and more to the point, the whole time his son has been fighting back tears. How much must it suck to be Santorum's son in the first place? And then, I know how much it hurts when your parent loses--our dad ran for school board three times, and lost three times--so it's impossible not to empathize with this kid.

[That's all, folks]
