It's funny to me to think about what music I responded to before I really knew any music--before I had developed any sort of critical response or genre identification. When I was five years old, and living in Mississippi, my favorite song was Boots. I thought the punchline ("one of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you") was hilarious, and it cracked me up every time I heard it. At around that time my older brothers (probably Steve more than Phil, but I'm a little hazy) really hated the song Somewhere, My Love, and made vomit noises whenever it played on the radio...so of course I joined in, unsure why I hated it, knowing only that it was the thing to do.
A few years later, when I was eight, I was fixated on Donovan's Atlantis. I never could make out most of the lyrics, but it appealed to my already-active taste for fantasy (I first read Lord of the Rings around that time).
What (non-'children's music') songs do y'all remember liking (or disliking) when you were children?
