One relatively minor point I meant to make here but didn't: it doesn't help that (as far as I can tell) Senator Clinton buys into the 'tough enough' framing. I don't know that I can exactly condemn her for it (even as I disagree with positions she takes in the course of proving her 'toughness'), but as long as the framing goes unchallenged it will continue to constrain any female presidential candidate. (And probably it will do so even after it's challenged. I'm just saying not challenging it guarantees its perpetuation.)
