I woke up at 3:30 Monday morning smelling smoke, so strong that I got up and checked to make sure our apartment wasn't burning. Turns out it was from this fire that burned half of Angel Island. Angel Island was a military base during the Civil War; later it was the Ellis Island of the West, where Asian immigrants were quarantined while awaiting resolution of their immigration status. Fortunately, all of the historic structures were saved. The vegetation will grow back.
